Sept 25, 2025 – RIYADH – Saudi Arabia Unveils the Oldest Known Human Settlement on the Arabian Peninsula
In a remarkable archaeological breakthrough, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Culture and Chairman of the Heritage Commission, Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Farhan, has announced the discovery of the oldest known human settlement on the Arabian Peninsula. The find was made at the Masyoun site, northwest of Tabuk, during excavations led by the Heritage Commission in partnership with Japan’s Kanazawa University and in collaboration with NEOM. Archaeologists have dated the settlement to the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period, between 11,000 and 10,300 years ago, shedding new light on the early chapters of human civilization in the region. First documented in the National Antiquities Register in 1978, Masyoun’s significance has been reaffirmed through renewed research since December 2022. Over four intensive excavation seasons, completed in May 2024, researchers uncovered evidence of early habitation and recorded remarkable rock art and inscriptions surrounding the site. The discovery not only deepens understanding of ancient human life on the Arabian Peninsula but also highlights Saudi Arabia’s growing prominence as a center for global archaeological research.
